DISC System: A Psychological Method for Improving Relationships and Achieving Goals
The DISC system, developed in the 20th century, is a unique tool designed to deeply explore and describe human behavior in various life situations. This methodology is grounded in ancient concepts of the four temperaments, which have been reinterpreted within the DISC framework. Unlike many other psychological theories, DISC focuses solely on behavioral styles and preferences, and does not delve into a person’s emotional or intellectual spheres. The DISC system identifies four basic behavioral types: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. To make these more relatable, they can be compared to the traditional temperaments: Dominance to choleric, Influence to sanguine, and Steadiness to phlegmatic, although there isn’t a direct equivalent for melancholic. Each type has distinct characteristics that describe how a person interacts with the world. For instance, the Dominance type is marked by decisiveness and assertiveness; the Influence type by sociability and optimism; the Steadiness type by calmness and stability; and the Conscientiousness type by precision and attention to detail.
The DISC assessment allows individuals to determine their predominant behavioral type and understand how these traits manifest in different situations. Knowing your own type and those of the people around you can significantly enhance your understanding of behavioral motivations and help avoid potential conflicts. The DISC system has gained popularity among managers and HR professionals for its ability to improve internal corporate relationships as well as help achieve strategic goals. In Western countries, personality traits such as proactivity, initiative, teamwork skills, and decision-making ability are thoroughly analyzed during the hiring process. In contrast, many domestic enterprises traditionally adhere to a rigid and authoritarian management style, which often negatively impacts productivity.
However, leading Russian companies are beginning to recognize the importance of a scientific approach to management. Despite long-standing habits of command-and-control styles, they are striving to implement modern psychometric tools like the DISC system. This gradual shift helps overcome the difficulties of the transition period and leads to improvements in organizational culture.
